Dear Team,

Our Martin Luther King Day of Service activity this year is making mats for the homeless through the Motor City Mitten Mission.  We will do this at Tate Chutkow’s house after practice on January 21.  The older boys should plan to drive the non-driving boys to Tate’s house right from practice which runs from 8-10 that day.  Breakfast will be served, then a representative from Motor City Mitten Mission will teach the boys how to make the “plarn” (plastic yarn) from plastic shopping bags and how to turn the plarn into mats and pillows.  If you would like to know more about the organization, you can find it at this link.  https://www.motorcitymittenmission.org/mat-pillow-for-the-homeless. (Thank you to Debby Hoge for the great idea.)

If you use plastic shopping bags, will you start collecting them to use in this project?  These are the thin plastic bags you get at Kroger, Meijer, Target, etc.  You can drop them off at the Chutkows’ house over the weekend of MLK day or send them to practice with the boys that day.   (If you don’t already use plastic shopping bags, no need to start.  Motor City Mitten Mission will bring some, too.)

Thank you to Sonja Lengnick (Tate’s Mom) for spearheading this worthy cause and for offering up her home to host.  If you have any questions you can email her at SLengnick@khvpf.com>
